June update for Those Who Dare progress. We have an in-depth look at the cover art, as well as what we have been doing for May.

Welcome to June! This year has flown by and we have a lot to cover.

May

So first up, what have we been doing? We had been intending on closing late pledges a couple of weeks ago, and our May schedule was full of development and getting some feedback from some international playtesters before we start preparing the final draft for printing in June.

Unfortunately I (Luke) have been very unwell for most of May after getting COVID which developed into bronchitis. So things have been a little slow here but I am pleased to say I am finally recovering and ready for a busy June. Some tasks (like closing final pledging & launching the pledge manager) were delayed due to this.

Final Pledges & Pledge Manager

So this means we are going to be closing final pledges & launching the pledge manager this Monday the 10th of June. If you have been on the fence about backing, this is the last chance. If you miss out here, the only way to get a Founder's edition will be to catch us at a convention (more on that later....).

TWD Art

This one we are very excited about. Our extremely talented illustrator Danyon Street has been hard at work preparing the remaining art assets for publication. But the big one is the cover. (Left is the rear cover, right is the front cover).

If there are any art nerds among you you may recognise the front cover (right) image as a recreation of Der Verbotene Weg byCarl Spitzweg. We wanted Those Who Dare to draw from real historical pieces, giving players a chance to interact with history through an additional medium. But we also wanted some of our art to tell a subtle story, so we decided to make the cover a kind of two-way window. Napoleon looks out on a one-sided battle, daring to seize what he wants. But when we look back the other way, we see over his shoulder that his own fate is uncertain. No human can account for everything, so to have a chance we must dare to act.

Many of the artworks we are using are recreations of historic pieces, but we also have some originals to share. Each age features it's own header art like this bronze age piece:

We have many more reimagined artworks, as well as completely original pieces, going in to Those Who Dare and we are excited to share them. If you'd like to see more of Danyon's work, you can check it out here.

Conventions

We are also pleased to confirm that we will be at Spiel! in Essen, Germany this year. It's a big swing for us to go to such a big event so soon. But we are committed to bringing TWD to players around the world and are excited to be a part. We will have copies for sale there and will be running games for people interested in trying it out. If there's anything you'd like to see from us there, please get in touch.

Next Steps

With me being ill, Tom and I have a very big June to catch up. We still have some copy and some polishing to do around some of the more in-depth parts of the game, but the bulk of the development is complete. We have also started moving complete parts across into the final draft layout. This means June will be full of final development, editing, and layouts.

We have received some early production copies from a few printers and will be making a final decision on our printer this Monday.

As usual we will have another update for you early next month. If you can't wait, come say hi on our Discord.

Luke.
